Case Study Questions

1. Please detail how long you have worked for your organisation?

I have been working with Faithful & Gould since September 2006.

2. Please detail what your organisation does and what its objectives are
Faithful & Gould are a global firm of property and cost management consultants specialising in transport, property and specific industry sectors. The firm provides a flexible and multi-disciplinary approach providing clients with wide ranging expertise and knowledge.
3. What does your role entail & what sort of skills do you use in your job?

My role is varied and very much focused on projects. I play a support role within my team assisting on a variety of areas including asset reviews, database managements and site visits. Even though I have only been in the role for three months; I have already been involved in two high profile projects for a pharmaceutical and transport client.

Working in a Quantity Surveying role requires strong numerical & IT skills as you are working with figures and spreadsheets on a daily basis. It is also very much a people focused role which requires you to draw on interpersonal and communication abilities.

4. What is the best bit of your job & why?

I love the fact that Faithful & Gould is very team focused and a really friendly place to work.

My job provides me with variety; each day proves a new experience with new ideas and challenges.

The work I do is very much project based, which allows me to see how my input fits into the bigger picture. As a quantity surveying trainee, I am often required on site to check the process of a project. I really enjoy being out of the office as this practical experience helps me to relate what I am learning in the classroom.

The role is also very much about team work and I know that my input provides a valuable contribution to the overall success of the project.

5. What is your background and why did you decide to opt for a work based learning route with the Trust?

Originally I thought about going into the fashion design business. However, after the first year of my A Levels where I studied maths, accounting, business and design technology; I began to consider a career in the Construction industry.

I found out about the Trust via a careers event. Surveying seemed to tick a lot of boxes for me. It is people focused and project based with opportunities to specialise once qualified.

I applied to the Trust because of their work based learning route. I believe that this type of training will give me a real advantage over graduate surveyors. Not only do I have an opportunity to gain a globally recognised qualification; but I will also have valuable work experience, providing me with an enhanced CV.

6. What advice would you have for young people who may be contemplating the Trust’s apprenticeship route?

An Apprenticeship is hard work and you need to be disciplined to be able to juggle the demands of academic and business training. However it is an extremely worthwhile career opportunity and in the long term there are great career rewards.

I would also recommend this industry to girls. This is a profession that is much more than just working on a construction site. The opportunities are so wide ranging that I would suggest that there is something to suit everyone.

7. What are your plans for your future?

My immediate plans are to qualify as a Chartered Quantity Surveyor. Long term, I would like to specialise in project management as this is an area that particularly interests me.
