Introduction
The Chartered Surveyors Training Trust is working with a consortium of leading employers to offer Quantity Surveying apprenticeships working on construction projects in London. The apprenticeship is for two years with progression and ongoing employment opportunities.
Employers include contractors and private surveying firms including Balfour Beatty, EC Harris and Franklin+Andrews .
Job Description
We are looking for young people who are passionate about quantiry surveying or construction who would be keen to undertake a two year apprenticeship starting in September 2011. The apprenticeship will comprise an NVQ Level 3 in Surveying, Property and Maintenance and a BTEC Level 3 Diploma in Construction and the Built Environment. The apprenticeship will lead to Associate membership of the Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors. Although each company will have different requirements of their apprentice, typical duties may include:
- Assisting in the preparation of tender documentation, cost planning and post contract duties
- Photocopying and document binding
- Carrying out numerical calculations to assist surveyors
- Measuring and recording of construction and associated works for costing and payment purposes
- Entering information onto a database
- Attending site meetings
- Producing basic documents using Word, Excel, PowerPoint etc
- Using the internet for research and to obtain relevant information
- Providing assistance regarding the commercial and contractual arrangements of construction projects
Salary and contract
Competitive apprenticeship salary package with a full employment contract.
Working week
Minimum of 35 hours per week Monday – Friday including one day at college. The college based training will be carried out at Lewisham College.
Future Prospects
On completion of your apprenticeship and after becoming an Associate member of the Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors there is the opportunity to go onto degree level study and achieve full Chartered Surveyor status. This opportunity therefore offers real career progression for the right candidate.
Skills Required
Good communication, numeracy and IT skills are all vital to succeed in this role. You will need the ability to work as part of a team while also having plenty of your own initiative. Strong problem solving skills, attention to detail and a desire to come up with practical solutions are also important.
To be a Quantity Surveying Apprentice you should:
- Be good at maths and IT
- Be creative and practical
- Be adaptable and persevering
- Be interested in using computers for design work and calculations
- Be able to think in a methodical way
- Have a high level of accuracy
- Work well with other people
- Be able to organise the work of others
- Be able to present information effectively in speech, drawings and reports
- Willing to work in support function within the team to learn from others
- Be passionate about Quantity Surveying as a career
Qualifications required and eligibility
To be eligible for this apprenticeship you:
- Must be aged between 16 and 18
- Should preferably have four GCSEs or a UK Level 2 qualification or equivalent (preferably GCSEs should be with grades A-C in English, Maths and Science). Support may be available if you do not have these qualifications
- Must be eligible to live, work and remain in England
- Must have a strong interest in Quantity Surveying
- Be able to demonstrate how you would benefit from the support of the Chartered Surveyors Training Trust
Please note that if you already hold an NVQ Level 3 or higher or an Advanced Apprenticeship or higher you will not be eligible for this apprenticeship.
