The intention of My Environment – My Future is to build a far reaching schools programme that opens the eyes of young people, their teachers and their parents to the wide range of interesting, well paid and rewarding careers open to people offered by the built environment sector, with an initial focus on Surveying.

We enable teachers to deliver the existing Geography GCSE curriculum with enriched, real world content, supported by young professionals from Industry. By doing this we will overcome the outdated image of hard hats and muddy holes. We also address the Gatsby Benchmark 4, linking curriculum learning to careers, that schools are now required to address.

By working with supportive teachers, we target the urban environment area of the geography curriculum, and set students a complimentary challenge to go a little further, most likely, partly in their own time, to prepare a competition entry that would document their work and findings.

CSTT, through its teacher and employer contacts, will provide lesson plans, access to information and resources relating to the built environment, an introduction to a supportive local employer and access to the CSTT

Schools website (offered via our partner, Building People CIC. The involvement of employers would be to act as a resource to teachers to provide real world context, potentially host site visits or explain the importance of aspects of the activity.

We will work with teachers and employers to continually make My Environment – My Future more relevant, easier to engage with and of increased value to all participants. All ideas and input will be welcome! Our hope is that, inspired by the project activity, students start looking for work experience, or even apprenticeship places in Surveying or the Built Environment sector more generally armed with a fuller understanding of the careers and opportunities available.

Competition winners would typically receive cash prizes or invitations for high profile exposure to projects such as CrossRail, HS2, the renovation of The Admiralty or Big Ben’s tower in London. Winners of the top prizes will also be invited to an awards ceremony at a prestigious location.

We intend to make My Environment – My Future as exciting as possible to mirror the exciting career opportunities it will open up.
