Chartered Surveyors Training Trust

2009 Quantity Surveyor Apprenticeship - Overview

Whilst we continue to develop a new training programme for all types of surveyor for launch in 2010 we have secured funding to be able to offer a limited number of quantity surveying apprenticeships commencing in 2009 for young people aged 18 based in England who are able to demonstrate the enthusiasm, commitment and ability to become Quantity Surveyors but who face barriers to being able to start on their career journey without additional support.

Trainees who meet our rigorous criteria will be placed with one of our approved employers. A mentor, a recently qualified young person who has been trained through our mentor training scheme, will support every trainee. Trainees will be able to meet up with their mentor regularly and will also be supported via an e-mentoring and e-networking system.

Trained Counsellors within the Trust team will provide pastoral support and counseling and NVQ Assessors will regularly assess work based competence. There will also be great opportunities to meet with other apprentices, to network with Chartered Surveyors and to attend our social events.

Your salary

Salaries vary significantly depending on the type of surveyor you are and the level of experience you have. Once fully qualified, surveyors can expect to earn from £30,000 to £35,000, increasing with experience.

Of course, as a trust trainee you won’t start at this level but potentially you will have the opportunity to develop strong earning power. Initially you will be on a training salary of approximately £8,000 per year. This steadily rises as you progress and you could expect to be paid between £14-16,000 by the time you are at university and £24,000 upon graduation.

On top of this, the Trust pays for all your college and university fees so that you have no training debts and you will also receive an annual book allowance. Additionally, various hardship funds are available if required and fully funded additional training can be provided if you experience difficulty in any subjects or within your work.

After your apprenticeship

When you complete your apprenticeship you will then have the opportunity to continue with the Trust as a ‘Managed Student’. This will allow you to progress to study on a degree in Quantity Surveying and to take your RICS Assessment of Professional Competence in order to become a Chartered Surveyor. Bursaries and Scholarships are also available for successful applicants wishing to become Managed Students and whose employers are not able to provide financial support for fees.

Whilst the Trust endeavours to place all successful applicants we cannot guarantee placements; the final decision lies with the employer and therefore we would advise all applicants to consider other career options in conjunction with their application to the Trust.
